Acknowledged as a nutrient vital for a robust immune system, Vitamin C may also be crucial for slowing down the human body’s ageing process. The study published in the latest edition of the American journal Rejuvenation Research has underscored a protective mechanism in the human body aimed at maintaining the level of ascorbic acid in blood plasma, which invariably keeps falling with age. Rizvi, who is a professor of biochemistry at the Allahabad University, said the human body is endowed with several anti-oxidant defense mechanisms to minimize damage from free radicals. Vitamin C happens to be one of the most important among such defense mechanisms.
For his study, Rizvi had collected blood samples of 61 healthy people in the age group of 22-79 years and studied the activity of the enzymes ‘AFR relocates and PMRS which are responsible for transporting electrons from inside the cell to outside which helps maintain the level of ascorbic acid in the blood. While the minimum amount of the vitamin required for humans is 100 grams per day, it may, however, not be sufficient to bring the therapeutic effects into play. Until medicines, which can boost the two enzymes, are available people can carry forward their battle against aging with the help of a diet rich in Vitamin C found in abundance in green chilies, lemons, oranges and guavas.
Researchers have found nine new genes on the X-chromosome that, when knocked out, lead to learning disabilities. An international team of researchers, from more than 70 countries, studied almost all X chromosome genes in 208 families with learning disabilities and found approximately 1-2 per cent of X chromosome genes, when knocked-out, have no apparent effect on an individual’s ability to function in the ordinary world. Estimates suggest that the prevalence of learning disability is 2-3 per cent. Learning disability is significantly more common in males than in females and genetic causes have long been sought on the Xchromosome. Males have only one X chromosome and so a gene mutation on the X is more likely to have an effect in males than in females. In part because of their apparent effects in males, X-linked disorders have been well studied by geneticists over the past 25 years.
In the future, similar strategy will be used to find disease causing sequence variants implicated in other complex genetic diseases. Some characteristics in common could be identified in patients with variants in the same gene. However, in many, learning disability was the only feature. Sweet stuff attracts boys more than girls, says a new study. Researchers at University of Copenhagen in Denmark have carried out the study and found that though girls have a finer sense of taste than boys, the latter have a sweeter tooth. According to them, on average boys need 10 per cent more sourness and 20 per cent more sweetness in their grub to recognise how tasty it is. But, boys prefer wild and extreme tastes compared to the muted flavours favoured by girls. In fact, the researchers have based their findings on an analysis of the tasting ability of 9,000 schoolchildren by giving them a sample testing kit and asking them questions on their food habits.
Surprisingly, 30 per cent of the participants said they would prefer non sugary soft drinks. Meanwhile, the greatest shift in recognizing taste comes between the ages of 13-14 years, when children become sensitive to sourness and their love of sweetness starts to wane. It is why many young teens claim they are not fussy eaters, the study revealed. Lead researcher Bodil Allesen-Holm said the results provided food for thought for the food industry and parents. ‘According to the findings, healthy snacks could easily be developed for boys with slightly extreme and sour flavours. ‘The study was carried out in assistance with a team from the Danish Science Communication.
